Bitcoin Letter to My Family — Starter Checklist
Write a plain letter that tells your family the Bitcoin exists and how to reach it, without giving the keys to whoever reads it first. Download the printable 1-page PDF below or open the interactive 6-step builder to generate your full tailored packet.
1. What to Write Down (Locations, Never Secrets)
- • What you hold: Each wallet or exchange account (no exact balances or addresses needed).
- • Wallet type & model: Coldcard, Trezor, Ledger, Jade, Bitkey, and whether it is Single-Sig or Multisig.
- • Where the physical backups live: Write the place (“steel plate, master closet floor safe”), never the words.
- • A passphrase, if you use one: State that one exists and where it is stored. Without it, the 12 or 24 words open an empty wallet with $0 and no error.
- • Who to trust: 1–2 technical helpers plus your estate attorney or executor.
2. What NEVER to Write Down
- • Never write your 12 or 24 seed words in plain text in this letter, in your will (wills become public during probate), in email, or in a photo.
- • Never store the seed backup and the explanation letter in the same place.
- • Never split a seed by giving Words 1–12 to one person and 13–24 to another.
3. Warn Your Heirs About Scammers & Test It Once a Year
- • Warn your family that no real company will ever ask for the 12/24 words on a website, phone call, or DM, and that “crypto recovery services” are scams.
- • Have your spouse or heir follow your letter once a year using a spare device or $5 test wallet while you watch silently.
